Learn about the effects of opioids and how to become empowered for a lifetime of recovery through a variety of learning exercises. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we are providing education and training through virtual meeting software and the World-Wide-Web. Educational programs are being offered to improve the public's capacity to recognize and avoid the dangers of misuse/abuse of prescription opioids.

 

Awareness and Prevention Training

This session discusses some approaches on why people become dependent upon and misuse substances. Participants will learn about theories and models of addiction.

In this session, Dr. Ralph Petersen, MD, will define what opioids are and how they affect the brain and body (neurological system) and cause an addiction.

The purpose for this program is to introduce the importance of safely disposing unused, unwanted, and expired prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs. The most commonly used disposal method will be discussed.

In this session, Dr. Chan S Hwang, M.D., will talk about pain and how it has a beneficial role in protecting an individual who has been harmed from further harm and motivates the person to find a remedy. We will learn how the brain interprets pain and activates endorphins to reduce pain.
